Susan Rochester is the managing director of Balance at Work. Susan has over 30 years’ experience across a range of industries, a Master of Human Resource Management degree and expert accreditation in Harrison Assessments.

Paula's career path

I started my working life in finance in a large private sector organisation but then decided that I really wanted to work closely with employees.  From there I did a secondment in HR and loved it.  I went back to study and moved into the HR field.  The more experience I got the more I realised that the psychology side of HR was what really interested me. Since then I have focused more in this area and completed further studies in management psychology.


Paula's message to her younger self

Have the courage to try different things and take on opportunities.  If they seem daunting, know that you will never fail as success is not about achieving the highest level of performance or getting things right but it is about the experiences along the way that will help you grow as a person.

Why Susan likes working here

This role has allowed me to venture back into the workforce on a part-time basis, whilst my children were still young. I enjoy having the flexibility to juggle work along with the needs of three young children and a husband, which is most important to me!



I admire Richard Branson.  His quote “Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of the employees, they will take care of the clients” is something so many employers still need to learn.

My friends and family also know I am a Disney freak, so my other choice would be Walt Disney.  My favourite Disney quotes are very simple:  “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing” and “Keep moving forward”.
